The 1998 Chevrolet S-10 had a wide range of drivetrain setups available to cater to various buyers. Included in this range were two transmission options: a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. These two transmissions use their respective fluids for lubrication, cleaning and cooling.
With the automatic transmission, the 1998 Chevy S-10 holds a total of 11.2 quarts of Dexron-III, or equivalent, transmission fluid, but it only requires 5 quarts to refill it following a drain-and-refill service. Chevrolet does not provide a precise capacity for the five-speed transmission, rather it states to refill the transmission with Dexron-II, or equivalent transmission fluid, until the top of the fluid is level with the bottom of the filler hole on the side of the transmission.
