What Is the Type of Transmission Fluid that Goes Into a 2000 Chevrolet S10?

Chevy equipped the 2000 S10 pickup with a 2.2-liter, inline four-cylinder engine bolted to an NV1500 manual transmission as standard equipment. Chevy offered the 4L60-E four-speed automatic as an option. The optional 4.3-liter V-6 engine came with either the 4L60-E automatic or an NV3500 manual transmission. Chevy's fluid recommendation is different for each transmission.

Automatic Transmission

  • In the owner's manual that came with the 2000 S10, Chevy recommended Dexron III fluid for the 4L60E automatic transmission. However, service bulletin No. 04-07-30-037D released in November of 2007, changed that recommendation to Dexron VI.

Manual Transmission

  • Chevy recommends Synchromesh Transmission Fluid -- GM Part No. 12345349
or equivalent -- for manual transmissions bolted up to the 4.3-liter V-6 engine. They recommend Friction Modified Synchromesh Transmission Fluid -- GM Part No. 12377916 or equivalent -- for manual transmissions bolted up to the 2.2-liter engine.
