How to Troubleshoot the BMW Trunk Lock

BMW is a luxury German vehicle line manufactured and sold around the world. The car company features sedans, sports coupes and sport utility vehicles. A central locking system controls the door locks and trunk luck. The trunk may be opened by the push of a button from the inside or outside of the vehicle. A key remote that isn't properly working may prevent a BMW trunk from opening. How the key remote is used may also prevent a trunk from opening.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Open the trunk from the inside of the car. Press the "Trunk" button located to the left of the steering wheel.

  • Check your distance when using the key remote. The "Trunk" button on the key remote only works from a distance of 3 to 25 feet. Stand closer or farther away if your trunk button doesn't work.

  • Check for objects blocking the trunk. Ice and dirt can clog the opening of the trunk. Remove and/or clean objects from the trunk to open.

  • Change the battery in the remote. Take the integrated key out of the remote. Insert a flathead screwdriver under the battery cover to pop it off. Remove the old battery. Replace with a new battery. The battery model number can be found on the surface. Place the new battery in the remote and snap the cover back on.

  • Take your vehicle to an authorized BMW auto mechanic. The lock mechanism may be broken in your trunk. A trailed professional can properly diagnose and fix such a problem.
