Why Is My Car Leaking Gas?

Your car may be leaking gas because of a problem in areas such as the gas cap, fuel injection line, the vent hose from the gas tank or the fuel pressure regulator.

Gas Cap

  • A gas leak is a problem that needs immediate attention because leaking gas can catch on fire. An old gas cap can leak if the seal is damaged or missing. If it doesn't tighten properly, it should be replaced. You can lose up to a gallon of gas in 15 days with a faulty gas cap, according to the Department of Ecology in Washington State.

Fuel Fittings

  • Fuel fittings and fuel lines are also common areas for gas leaks. Gasoline may be coming from the back of the car from the tank. Or gas may be on top of your engine near the injector lines or the fuel pump.

Fuel Pressure

  • If your fuel pressure is too high, excessive fuel is being fed to the engine and the fuel pressure regulator may need adjusting. Gas could also be leaking if the diaphragm of the regulator is broken, according to Cars Direct. Don't hesitate to contact your mechanic.
