How to Remove the Diesel Particle Filter on a 2008 F-250

As emissions requirements get tougher, more and more requirements are made of vehicles. One recent addition to diesel powered vehicles are diesel particulate filters (DPFs) which mount inline with the exhaust. These are designed to catch any of the excess materials expelled from the exhaust of the engine to keep them from entering the atmosphere. These filters need maintenance and will need to be maintained on a regular basis. The 2008 Ford F-250 has one of these filters, and if your's needs maintenance, then you'll need to remove the old one.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Silicone spray lubricant
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Lift the truck using the jack. Put the F-250 on four jack stands so that all four wheels are off of the ground.

  • Locate the DPF, which is next to the transfer case on the transmission, inline with the exhaust. Spray the threads on the exhaust next to the DPF using the silicone spray.

  • Unbolt the filter from the exhaust using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the exhaust apart so you can access the filter. Pull the filter out of the exhaust.
