How to Disable the Security on a Grand Am

The Pontiac Grand Am has an anti-theft mechanism in the sound system. Unless the mechanism is disabled, it shuts down the sound system if its power is disconnected. To prevent rendering your sound system inoperable any time you disconnect the battery, you must perform a sequence of steps. You can retrieve your secret code by contacting your local vehicle dealer and giving them your vehicle identification number (VIN), which is found at the base of the windshield.

Things You'll Need

  • Anti-theft secret code

Disable the Anti-Theft System

  • Turn on the ignition and turn off the radio. Press the 1 and 4 buttons on the radio at the same time for five seconds. The radio display will show "SEC" which means the anti-theft system is enabled.

  • Press the "MN" button so that the display shows "000."

  • Press the "MN" button until the display reads the same numbers as your secret code.

  • Press the "HR" button until the numbers match your secret code.

  • Press the AM/FM button. The display will read three dashes if the anti-theft is properly disabled. If it does not read three dashes, then your code is incorrect or incorrectly entered and the security system is still enabled.
