Mazda 6 Won't Start

The Mazda 6 was introduced by Mazda in 2002 as a mid-sized, front engine, front wheel drive sedan. If your Mazda 6 has trouble starting, there are various things that could be causing the issue. Knowing what the issue is will let you better decide if a professional is needed to repair your Mazda.

  • Turn the key in the ignition and listen for any sounds that the engine may emit. No sound is an indicator of a bad ignition switch or a battery problem. A clicking noise may be the signs of a bad starter. A thumping noise can indicate a problem in your fuel system, including the fuel pump, fuel line, and fuel filter.

  • Open the hood and look at the battery terminal connections. If the connections to the terminal are loose, tighten with a socket wrench. For any corrosion, pour soda over the corroded area and scrub with a wire brush.

  • Remove a spark plug wire and touch it to a metal part of your Mazda 6 engine. Have a helper turn the key in the ignition. If the wire does not emit a blue spark, the spark plugs are not igniting the engine properly and will need to be replaced.

  • Add in a gallon of gas to your Mazda 6. Although the vehicle has a gas gauge, it can be faulty. After adding gas, pump the accelerator a few times while turning the key to the "On" position and back two to three times. This will help to engage the fuel pump. Attempt to start car. The 2003 Mazda 6 was recalled due to a an improperly installed fuel tank that may leak fuel. This can cause an improper reading on the gauge. Call Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 to see if your Mazda 6 is eligible to be repaired.

  • Note any problems that you may have had prior to the car not starting. Sluggish acceleration and poor gas mileage are signs that the fuel delivery system is not working properly. The Mazda 6 should get 20 miles per gallon city driving and 29 mpg highway.
