How to Raise the Top on a Saab Convertible

While older styles of vehicles relied upon a manual convertible top that needed to be physically handled in order to raise or lower it, modern vehicles utilize an electrical system that opens and closes the convertible top. Depending on the make and model of Saab you drive, you could have a manual or electronic convertible top on your vehicle, and the methods for raising and lowering them are distinctly different.

Electric Top

  • Park your Saab in a flat area where this is no wind, preferably a garage interior where sudden gusts will not occur. Set the parking brake, as some models of Saab vehicles will not allow the convertible top to raise or lower until the brake is set.

  • Press the button for the convertible top. The button will be located either on the middle console or on the dashboard, depending on the make/model of Saab you are driving. Keep the button pressed down until the convertible top has unfolded directly above your head. Release pressure on the button.

  • Unfasten the windshield latching mechanisms, either on the convertible top itself or on the upper edge of the windshield, depending on make and model.

  • Press the convertible top button to finish opening the cover. Latch the top in place when you are finished.

Manual Top

  • Park the vehicle in a garage and turn the engine off.

  • Exit the vehicle and locate the convertible top compartment for your Saab. This is normally located on the rear of the vehicle; however; locations may vary depending on the make and model, so check your owner's manual.

  • Open the compartment door and unfold the convertible top. Stretch the cover out over the top of the vehicle, pulling it tight up against the windshield to get all the folds out of the cover.

  • Locate the windshield locking mechanisms and unlock them.

  • Ensure that all of the side runners for the convertible top are in place. The side runners are the ones that run on top of the windows and side panels of the Saab.

  • Attach the top cover to the windshield and lock the latches. Double check the convertible top to make sure everything is in place before driving.
