How to Locate the Electronic Temperature Control Sensor in a S10 Pickup

The S-10 pickup was a compact pickup truck manufactured by Chevrolet from 1982 to 2004, when it was discontinued. S-10 models manufactured from 1982 to 1993 featured an engine system that utilized an electronic engine temperature sensor. S-10 models manufactured after 1993 no longer used the engine temperature sensor. Therefore, locating the engine temperature sensor on your S-10 truck is impossible if it was manufactured after 1993, but finding it on earlier models is as simple as locating the engine.

  • Park your Chevrolet S-10 on even ground in a safe location. Engage the parking brake or apply tire stops to the wheels of the truck to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

  • Pop open the hood of the truck. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery unit. Look in the upper engine area on the driver's side of the engine. Locate the engine temperature sensor mounted on the driver's side of the engine on the rear cylinder head.

  • Identify the engine temperature sensor as a metal and plastic pipe sticking out of the rear cylinder head. Look for a copper-colored pipe surrounded by an oval-shaped connector.
