How to Remove an Ignition Key

Removing a key from the ignition is the best way to ensure that your vehicle is completely turned off. Sometimes having the key in the ignition, but in the off position, triggers electronic systems in a vehicle to turn on. By removing the key, you can be assured that your car will not waste battery power or gas while you are not in it. You can also ensure that no one drives off with your car.

  • Put the vehicle in park and pull the emergency brake. Many vehicles will not release a key unless they are in park. Even if the key could be released while the vehicle is in gear, putting in in park will prevent it from moving unexpectedly.

  • Turn the key counterclockwise while pushing in slightly.

  • Pull the key straight out from the ignition.

  • Twist the steering wheel slightly back and forth if the key will not release. Sometimes the steering wheel position can cause the ignition to lock. Twisting the steering wheel can help release the key.
