How to Check the Oil in a 2001 Honda 500 Rubicon

Engine oil is necessary for any gasoline-powered engine. Oil lubricates the many moving parts within the engine, keeping it from overheating due to friction. A low oil level can cause major engine damage. Checking the engine oil for your 2001 Honda Rubicon ATV is a simple task that you should routinely perform each time you ride the vehicle. It only takes a few moments, but can serve to protect the engine and prevent expensive and unnecessary repairs. Checking the engine oil on the 2001 Rubicon is similar to checking the engine oil on any ATV.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towel or old rag
  • Park the Rubicon on a level surface. Do not drive the Rubicon prior to checking the oil.

  • Start the Honda Rubicon engine, and allow the ATV to idle for approximately five minutes, but no more than 10 minutes. Do not press the throttle while the ATV is idling, or the oil level will be incorrect.

  • Shut the engine off, and wait approximately three minutes.

  • Locate the engine oil dipstick, directly beside the oil filler cap, on the right side of the engine. The oil filler cap is near the right foot pedal.

  • Turn the dipstick counterclockwise to unscrew it. Pull it out of the oil tank, and clean the end with a paper towel or old rag.

  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, but do not screw it.

  • Pull the dipstick back out, and examine the oil level on the dipstick. The oil level should be between the upper and lower level on the dipstick. If the oil level is insufficient, add oil to the Rubicon, and check the oil level, until it is between the upper and lower level on the dipstick.

  • Reinsert the dipstick into the oil tank, and screw it clockwise to tighten.
