How to Install Splash Guards

Splash guards, or mud flaps, are attached to the undercarriage of a car or truck just above and behind the wheels to keep debris, mud and pebbles from getting into the treads of tires. You can find a variety of colors, characters and even political statements on a new pair of flaps for the enjoyment of yourself and other motorists.

Things You'll Need

  • Jacks
  • Jack stands
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Cloth
  • Solvent
  • Panel tool
  • Screwdriver
  • Power drill
  • Raise the front end of the car and support it with jack stands.

  • Remove the lug nuts. Pull the front wheels off the car.

  • Wipe down the inside of the wheel wells with a cloth and solvent. Any matter that is left behind will get trapped between the splash guards and the car.

  • Hold the front right guard against the right front wheel well in the position it will be in when installed. Remove the pins that line up with the holes in the guard with the panel removal tool.

  • Line up the holes in the guard with the now open holes in the wheel well. Insert the screws through the holes and tighten them. Secure them from the back with nuts.

  • Drill through any of the holes in the guard that don't have corresponding holes in the well, through the vehicle. Insert screws and nuts through these holes.
