How to Replace the Power Steering Fluid in a Maxima GXE

Over time, it may become necessary to change the power steering fluid in your Nissan Maxima GXE. Changing your power steering fluid isn't something you need to do as frequently as an oil change. However, it is an important part of your Maxima's maintenance. One indication that your power steering fluid may need to be changed (or at least filled) is if the vehicle seems less responsive than usual. The repair can easily be performed at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Funnel
  • Drain pan
  • Bottle of power steering fluid
  • Open your hood and locate your power-steering fluid reservoir. On your Maxima GXE, it should be located on the right side of the engine block, not too far from the driver's side window.

  • Remove the return line from the side of the power steering fluid by gently pulling it off.

  • Place the return line into the funnel and allow the fluid to drain through the funnel into the drain pan.

  • Start your Maxima GXE and turn the steering wheel to and fro to drain out any excess fluid.

  • Reattach the return line to the power steering fluid reservoir tank and fill the tank with new fluid.
