Adjusting your 2001 Pontiac Grand Am's headlights only needs to be done when you replace the headlights and the new housing assembly is not already adjusted by the manufacturer. This typically happens when purchasing aftermarket headlight assemblies. If the headlights are not properly adjusted, then you risk decreased visibility while driving at night. You also risk blinding oncoming traffic.
Park your Grand Am 25 feet away from a closed garage door. Make sure that the headlights are aimed at the door.
Turn on the headlights and open the hood.
Turn the adjustment screws on the top of the headlight with a Torx-head wrench to adjust the headlight-beam pattern. The screw towards the middle of the headlight adjusts the vertical position. The screw towards the fender on the headlight assembly adjusts the horizontal position of the beam pattern. The center of the headlight-beam pattern should point at the bottom of the garage door where the door meets the ground. Both headlights should overlap by 50 percent.
