How to Take Off Window Tint Glue

Window tint is an expensive factory option, so if you want the look of tinted glass but can't afford the extra feature you can apply your own window tint. This has a glue backing that adheres to the glass of the car. However, over time the window tint begins to peel off. This leaves an unattractive bubbled appearance on the window. To correct this issue you need to remove the window tint and the glue.

Things You'll Need

  • Trash bags
  • Soapy water
  • Spray bottle
  • Ammonia
  • Razor blade
  • Fine steel wool
  • Park your car in the sunlight. The warmth of the sunlight helps the removable process.

  • Spray soapy water on the outside of the window. Place a trash bag over the outside of the window and smooth the bag out so it covers the entire window. The water and the black trash bag help absorb heat and improve your ability to remove the window tint and glue.

  • Cover your car seats around the inside of the window with more trash bags.

  • Spray the inside of the car window with ammonia. You want to heavily spray the window and coat all of the glass.

  • Press another trash bag against the inside of the window. The ammonia helps the trash bag stick and helps trap the heat from the sunlight. Allow the trash bags to sit on the window for at least an hour.

  • Remove the trash bags, then lift up the corner of the window tint and peel it off. The tint it is going to peel off rather easily, leaving little to no glue.

  • Scrape off the little bits of glue stuck to the window with a razor blade, then rub the window with a very fine piece of steel wool. Wash both sides of the window with soap and water.
