How to Adjust the Steering Wheel in a Ford Truck

There are three ways to adjust the optional tilt steering wheel on some Ford trucks: manual adjustment, remote control or "Easy Entry." The latter method is easiest if your truck is so equipped. The truck discussed here is a 2010 Ford F-150, but the process is similar for other models and years.

Manual Adjustment

  • Sit in the driver's seat and locate the release control lever on the left side of the steering wheel. You will find it below the turn signal/wiper control stalk. If you have power tilt steering, look for a button rather than a lever; this button will be labeled "Tilt" and will have up and down arrows.

  • Pull the lever toward you (or simply press the button if you have power tilt steering).

  • Adjust the steering wheel by moving it (or the button) up or down to your desired position.

  • Let go of the control lever (or button) to lock the steering wheel into position.

Remote Control

  • Manually adjust the steering wheel as described in "Manual Adjustment" above. You'll need to do this only once. You can also adjust the mirrors, pedal and seat if you wish to store those settings.

  • Press and hold the button on your key fob remote that has the seat icon and is labeled "1." This button is called Control Button 1. Hold it down for five seconds, until you have heard two separate tones.

  • Press the "Lock" key on the remote within three seconds to save your settings.

  • Press "Unlock" on the remote any time you enter the truck and want to return the steering wheel (and mirrors, pedal and seat) to your personal memory setting.

Easy Entry

  • Sit in the driver's seat and locate the message center (if equipped on your truck) in the instrument cluster.

  • Find the "Select/Reset" stem in your speedometer. Press and release the stem to cycle through various features until you see "Hold Reset for Setup Menu."

  • Press and keep holding the "Select/Reset" stem, which will activate the setup menu. The system will cycle through various features until it finally displays "Easy Entry."

  • Press and release the "Select/Reset" stem to activate Easy Entry.

  • Insert your key into the ignition. The steering wheel will lower to its previous position. (The seat will also move.) Once you perform the initial activation, all you will have to do is put your key into the ignition and the steering column will automatically lower to its previous position. Take the key out of the ignition, and the steering column will automatically go to its full upward stop so you can easily slide in and out of the truck.
