Many types of car repairs are difficult for the do-it-yourselfer, but Jeeps have been built with a tail light assembly that's easy to access and change. Best of all, there are few differences in repairing the tail lights throughout Jeep's product line.
Purchase the proper tail light bulb to replace the defective bulb. Provide the parts department with your Jeep's year and model.
Open the rear hatch. Just inside the car, right behind where the tail light is, search for two Phillips screws. Remove these and set them aside.
Grasp the plastic tail light cover and pull it directly away from the car. A small pin holds the assembly to the car and should pull away easily. The tail lights will be fully exposed.
Press in slightly on the bad bulb and turn the bulb counterclockwise. Release the pressure on the bulb and it should pull straight out.
Insert the new bulb. Note that there are one or two small bumps on the side of the base of the new bulb. Insert the bumps into the notches on the bulb receptacle. Press the bulb in and turn the bulb 1/4 to 1/2 turn clockwise until it is seated firmly
Replace the plastic tail light cover and screw in the two screws you removed earlier. Test the tail light to make certain it is working properly.
