Chevrolet Tahoe Maintenance

The 5.3-liter engine in all 2014 Chevy Tahoe trim levels is protected by a maintenance system that monitors the condition of the engine oil. This system will flash a message when the oil needs to be changed. If the vehicle is used for very light duty, the system may allow you to get up to a year out of the oil, regardless of mileage. Many other systems share a 7,500-mile service interval.

7,500-Mile Service

  • Check your oil level and condition at this mileage, and at every subsequent 7,500-mile interval thereafter. Refer to your Oil-Life Monitor and change the oil with six quarts of new 5W-30 Dexos-1 approved engine oil if you are near the indicated zero percent oil life remaining. Replace the filter with a new GM part No. 89017524 or equivalent. Have the tires rotated and inspected for any damage or abnormal wear patterns that could be indicative of suspension misalignment, and make any necessary repairs.

45,000-Mile Service

  • At 45,000 miles, include an inspection of all hoses and connections in the evaporative emissions system of your Tahoe. Ensure that they are securely connected to their fittings, and replace any that are degraded. Replace your air-cleaner element with a new GM part No. 15908916 or equivalent every four years or 45,000 miles, whichever comes first.

97,500-Mile Service

  • The 97,500-mile service on your Tahoe includes a spark plug and spark plug wire inspection. Pull the plugs and inspect them for conditions that could indicate a problem with your engine, such as a whitish coating, carbon or oil fouling or physical damage. Replace the plugs with new plugs, GM part No. 12621258 or equivalent, gapped to 0.040 inch. Inspect the wires for insulation breakdown, damage at the boots, and corrosion or damage to the terminals, and replace as necessary.

150,000-Mile Service

  • Drain and replace your coolant with 18.3 quarts of coolant mixture. Mix Dex-Cool coolant with potable water in a 50 percent solution to use in your cooling system. Replace the brake fluid with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid, GM part No. 19299818 or equivalent, and bleed the brakes. Replace the transmission fluid and filter, as well as the transfer case fluid on four-by-four models, with fresh Dexron -VI transmission fluid.

Resetting The Oil-Life Monitor

  • After changing your oil, reset your Oil-Life Monitor so it can accurately track the oil condition. Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position, but do not start the engine. Slowly press the accelerator pedal through its full range of motion three times within five seconds, and your system should be reset. If you have the Driver Information Center option, you can verify by cycling through the vehicle information menu until you see the Oil Life Remaining screen, which should read 100 percent.
