How to Remove a Roof Rack on a Ford Explorer

Removing the roof rack from your Ford Explorer is a quick and simple task. The rack is held on by six to eight screws; removing the screws will free it. This will leave open new ideas for customizing your vehicle. You can attach a rear spoiler or wing to the back, for example, to avoid any overkill of accessories on your roof with the removal of the roof rack.

Things You'll Need

  • Stepladder
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Star wrench or bit
  • Silicone
  • Place a stepladder next to your Explorer. Position the ladder in the middle of the roof rack.

  • Unscrew the Phillips-head screws along the middle of the roof rack rail. Three or four screws hold the rack in place here.

  • Move the ladder to the other side of the vehicle, and pull out those screws too. Now simply lift up the rack railing. The cross sections of the rack, which are attached to the rails, will come off with the railing.

  • Remove the inner rails with a star wrench. There should be three to four rails to remove.

  • Clean the newly exposed metal to remove the outline of the rack that was once there.

  • Cover the exposed holes with silicone. This will protect your roof from leakage. Reinsert the screws into the holes to enforce the silicone. If desired, you can use touch-up paint to cover the screws so they are less noticeable.
