Checking the fluid level of your power steering fluid is a simple at home maintenance procedure for your Pontiac Bonneville and can help prolong the life of your vehicle. The most difficult part of checking the fluid level is finding the fluid reservoir, but once you do, the process is simple and can save you a lot of time and money on repairs down the road.
Check the power steering fluid level in your Pontiac Bonneville every six months. You can check the fluid level sooner if you experience trouble steering or suspect a leak.
Make sure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface and that the engine is cool before you check the power steering fluid level. Power steering fluid that is warm or on an incline will result in an incorrect level reading.
Open the hood and locate the power steering fluid reservoir in the engine department. The reservoir is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, on top of the power steering pump and below the alternator. Look for a black canister with a black cap.
Remove the cap and dipstick. Clean the dipstick with a rag and re-insert the dipstick and remove to read the fluid level. Add fluid very gradually if it is below the low level mark, and make sure that you do not add fluid above the maximum level mark.
Inspect the reservoir and surrounding hoses and clamps for any worn or broken parts. Replace any faulty components or take the vehicle in for service immediately, as hot fluid leaking into the engine can seriously damage your Pontiac Bonneville.
