What Kind of Oil Does a 98 GMC Yukon Use?

The 1998 Yukon from GMC came with a 5.7-liter V-8 Vortec 5700 gasoline engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. General Motors recommends oil certified by the American Petroleum Institute and displays the certification starburst on the bottle. SAE 5W-30 is best for your Yukon, but you can use SAE 10W-30 if the temperatures stay above 0 degrees F. For extreme cold, you can use SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil or SAE 0W-30 oil for more reliable starting in those frigid temperatures.

Oil Change Interval

  • If most of your driving consists of short trips and city driving or if you tow a trailer, change the oil in your Yukon every three months or 3,000 miles. For long trips or highway driving, change the oil every 12 months or 7,500 miles. Driving your Yukon with the engine warmed up and under highway conditions is gentler to the oil than short trips and long periods of idling. Change the oil filter at every oil change and refill the crankcase with 5 quarts of oil.
