How to Use Sea Foam in Oil

Using an oil additive can help keep your engine clean and running well for a long time. Oil additives, such as Sea Foam, may be used at every oil change or as a one-time treatment to clean a dirty or ill-maintained engine. This type of maintenance will extend the life of your vehicle and also help to cut down on the cost of repairs caused by a cruddy engine. Your car is one of the more expensive investments that you make; protect it by keeping it in top running condition.

Things You'll Need

  • Sea Foam
  • Oil
  • Oil filter
  • Funnel
  • Remove the oil filler cap from your engine. If you are not familiar with its location, refer to your owner's manual.

  • Use the funnel to pour Sea Foam through the oil filler cap. You will need 1 1/2 ounces for every quart of oil your car can hold.

  • Drive the car a minimum of 30 miles or 30 minutes. Do not exceed 100 miles.

  • Park the car where you will change the oil. When the car is cool enough to be worked on, perform an oil and filter change as normal.

  • Drive the car normally but remember that Sea Foam is a cleaner. The oil may get dirtier faster than usual. Make sure to check the oil frequently and change as necessary.
