Oil Change Instructions on a Honda Accord

The Accord was first introduced by Honda in the mid-1970s as a larger and more luxurious companion to their Civic model. The Accord grew in size over the years, and in 1995 a six-cylinder engine became an option, although an in-line four-cylinder engine has always been standard in the Accord. To keep the Accord engine running efficiently for many miles, Honda recommends changing the oil every 7,500 miles.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 car ramps
  • 2 wheel chocks
  • Rubber gloves
  • Drain pan
  • 17mm wrench or socket wrench
  • Replacement drain plug washer gasket (optional)
  • Rag
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil filter
  • 5 quarts motor oil
  • Funnel
  • Start the engine and warm up the car by letting it idle for 10 to 15 minutes or by driving it a short distance, as warm oil will drain from the engine crankcase much easier than cold oil.

  • Drive the car onto a set of car ramps. Place the transmission in park for automatics and in first gear for standard shift cars. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

  • Crawl under the front of the car and place a drain pan under the passenger side of the engine. Don a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands from hot oil.

  • Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the engine oil pan. Loosen the plug with a 17 mm wrench or socket and ratchet. Place the drain pan directly under the drain plug. Finish removing the plug by hand and allow the oil to drain from the engine and into the drain pan. Wipe the drain plug off with a rag and inspect the washer gasket. Replace the washer if looks damaged by sliding it off the threaded end of the plug and sliding a new washer into place. Place the drain plug aside.

  • Thread the drain plug back into the engine oil pan and tighten it with the wrench or socket wrench. Wipe the bottom of the oil pan where oil might have spilled with a rag. Slide the drain pan so it is directly under the engine oil filter, which is near the drain plug.

  • Remove the filter with an oil filter wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Turn the filter over in your hands and allow the oil inside to drain into the drain pan. Discard the filter. Wipe the filter mating surface on the engine with a clean rag. Spin a new filter into place on the engine and tighten it by hand until it is snug.

  • Open the hood and remove the engine oil dipstick and the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Place a funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in four quarts of motor oil. Replace the dipstick and check the oil level. Add just enough oil from a fifth bottle to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick. Remove the funnel and replace the oil filler cap and the dipstick.

  • Remove the wheel chocks and back the car off the ramps. Shut off the engine and check the oil level one last time. Add oil as necessary to bring it to the full mark on the dipstick, but do not overfill the crankcase.
