How to Change the Oil in a 1995 Honda Civic DX

You should change the oil in your 1995 Honda Civic DX every 3,000 miles. If the car has high mileage or you drive in demanding conditions, monitor your oil condition and change it more frequently if necessary. Replace the oil filter every time you change the oil to avoid introducing contaminants from an old filter into fresh oil. Buy 10W-30 oil and a replacement filter for your Civic DX at an auto parts retailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • Wrench set
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Raise your Honda Civic DX with a jack and place four jack stands beneath the car just inside each tire location.

  • Place a drain pan beneath the oil pan. Loosen the drain plug on the oil pan with a wrench. Wait while the oil drains from the pan. Tighten the drain plug with a wrench.

  • Move the drain pan beneath the oil filter mounting area at the rear of the engine block. Remove the filter with an oil filter wrench. The oil filter mounts halfway up the engine, directly above the driveshaft near the firewall.

  • Turn the filter upside down in the drain pan and let the oil drain out of it. Pour clean oil into the new filter until it is full. Spread a thin layer of clean oil on the gasket of the new oil filter. Clean the filter mounting area with a rag. Install the new filter by hand until it is snug. Tighten the filter with the oil filter wrench until it is tight, but do not over tighten it.

  • Raise the car slightly with the jack so you can pull the jack stands out. Place the car on the ground. Raise the hood and fill the engine with 3-4 quarts of 10W-30 oil. Check the oil level as you add oil to avoid over filling the oil pan. Replace the oil fill cover and close the hood.
