How to Clean Up Oil Spills on Land

Oil can spill on land when adding oil to outdoor lawn equipment or changing oil in a car. Oil is poisonous to animals, people and plants, so it is important to clean up any oil that has been spilled. You can clean up an oil spill on land quickly and effectively by using supplies that you can easily purchase.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Glasses
  • Protective clothing
  • Sawdust
  • Plastic bag
  • Shovel
  • Prepare to clean up the oil spill by dressing in protective clothing. Wear disposable gloves to avoid oil getting on your hands and glasses to keep the oil from getting in your eyes.

  • Sprinkle sawdust onto the oil spill. You can purchase sawdust at a home improvement store or use some you have on hand.

  • Let the sawdust sit and absorb the oil. This may take several minutes.

  • Scoop the sawdust into a plastic bag. You should use a shovel with a long handle to put the sawdust into the bag.

  • Clean off the shovel with a wet paper towel and place the paper towel and your gloves into the bag with the sawdust and oil.

  • Dispose of the bag of oil, sawdust, paper towel and gloves according to the guidelines in your city. If you do not know what the guidelines are, call your city's town hall and ask for the guidelines for disposing of oil.
