The oil filter on the 2000 Chevy Blazer 4.3-liter engine is placed forward (toward the front of the vehicle) of the oil pan. A small trap door conceals the filter. General Motors recommends replacing the oil and filter (and lubing the chassis) every 3,000 to 5,000 miles (depending on usage severity). It is recommended to always replace the oil filter when changing the oil.
Drive the Blazer slowly onto car ramps until the front wheels are seated in the top pits of the ramps.
Apply the parking brake and release the interior hood latch.
Open the hood and then remove the oil fill cap.
Put on safety glasses and latex gloves, then crawl under the Blazer with the remaining equipment.
Place the drain bucket under the oil pan and remove the oil drain plug with a hand wrench. Allow several minutes for the oil to drain before replacing and tightening the oil plug. Wipe the plug to ensure all grit is removed so it will seal properly.
Locate the trap door on the splash panel in front of the oil pan (toward the front of the Blazer) and turn the integral retaining screw counterclockwise a half turn to unseat it. The door will drop down from the front. Unhinge the door and remove it from the splash panel.
Use an oil filter wrench to turn the oil filter counterclockwise to loosen it (make sure the drain pan is aligned with the filter now), then remove the filter by hand. Oil will drain from the vertical filter when it becomes loose, so pay attention not to drip oil on yourself.
Wipe the oil filter flange clean with a shop rag and make sure the old filter gasket did not remain on the flange. If so, peel it off by hand.
Apply a light coat of clean oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter. Thread the filter on by hand and tighten it by hand only. Do not use the oil filter wrench to tighten it. When the filter feels "hand tight," twist it another half-turn to two-thirds of a turn.
Replace the trap door and reconnect the retaining screw. Refill the engine crankcase with the proper amount of oil
Remove all tools from under the Blazer and back the Blazer off the ramps. Let the engine run for a few minutes, then turn the engine off. Let the Blazer sit for 10 minutes or so. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
