How to Rotate Unidirectional Tires

Unidirectional tires are designed to provide the best traction and handling if they are mounted on a car to spin primarily in one direction. These tires will have arrows or chevrons embossed on the sidewall showing the required direction of rotation. A car with unidirectional tires cannot have the tires rotated in the typical cross-over rotation pattern.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydraulic floor jacks
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug wrench
  • Set the parking brake and chock the wheels on one side of the car, using two chocks on either side of each tire.

  • Jack up the non-chocked front wheel of the car using the hydraulic jack under a cross member of the car body or frame. Place a jack stand under the jack point shown in the owner's manual of the car and lower the car onto the jack stand.

  • Jack up the car at the rear on the same side and place a jack stand in the same manner as for the front wheel.

  • Remove the jacked up front and rear wheels and tires using the lug wrench.

  • Rotate the tires on that side of the car by moving the front tire to the rear and the rear tire to the front. Unidirectional tires must stay on the same side of the car.

  • Reinstall the lug nuts, tightening the nuts in a crossover, star pattern to achieve uniform tightness and torque on the nuts.

  • Lower the first side of the car to the ground by reversing the jacking process, lifting the car off the jack stands and lowering each tire to the ground.

  • Repeat the tire rotation process for the other side of the car.
