How to Change a Tire on a Chevrolet Express Van

Changing tires on your vehicle is an important skill to learn. A flat tire on the road could leave you stranded for hours if you do not know how to change it, or if you do not know where the jack and other tools are located in your vehicle. The spare tire on the Chevy Express Van is located under the rear of the van; all the tools needed to do the job are usually included in the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack handle
  • Lug wrench
  • Spare tire
  • Retrieve the jack, lug wrench and jack handle from the passenger's side, rear corner of the van. You will find them located inside the door, when you open the rear door.

  • Locate the two sections of extensions in the jack kit and connect them together. Insert the extensions through the hole in the rear bumper of the van, attach the jack handle to them and turn them counterclockwise to lower the spare tire to the ground.

  • Position the jack under the vehicle on the jacking point closest to the flat tire. There are several jacking points specified by the manufacturer: If you are jacking under the rear of the vehicle, use the axle housing to lift the van; for the front, use the frame rail, just behind the rear of the front tire. Raise the jack until it makes slight contact with the vehicle, but do not raise the van yet.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the flat tire using your lug wrench. Raise the jack until the tire is completely off the ground, and remove the flat tire and wheel from the van. Install the new tire onto the wheel studs and attach the lug nuts, tightening them by hand for now.

  • Lower the jack until the tire is on the ground, and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Attach the flat tire to the hoist under the rear of the van, and insert the extensions back into the hole in the bumper. Engage the hoist and turn the extensions clockwise using the jack handle, until the tire is sitting tightly against the body of the van.

  • Replace the jack, extensions and lug wrench back into the rear of the van, so that you will have them available in the future, should it become necessary.
