Little unexpected catastrophes are waiting around every corner, even ones requiring a tire pressure check. A savvy Subaru Outback driver will know the sound and feel when the tires are not right. To ensure your safety, it's best to stop the car immediately. Here are some steps you can take to check the tire pressure in your Subaru.
Store a flashlight and a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment at all times. This will allow you to check your air in any condition.
Remove the valve stem caps off your tires and place your gauge firmly over the opening until you no longer hear air escaping. No matter what kind of gauge you have, a firm seal gives you an accurate reading.
Look on the side of your tire, using your flashlight if necessary, to find the tire's recommended maximum and minimum tire pressure. Subaru recommends maintaining a pressure of at least 26 psi and no more than 36 psi for the crossover Outback. PSI stands for pounds per square inch of pressure.
Release some air and recheck the pressure if your tires are overinflated. This is a danger because it promotes blow-outs in tires. Press down the pin in the center of the valve stem to release air, and be careful not to bend the pin.
Drive to a nearby filling station or to your home air compressor, if your tire pressure is low. Under-inflated tires are also a cause of accidents on the road and should be handled with care. If possible, drive slowly along the side of the road with your hazard lights on if driving at night until you find an air pump.
