How to Replace a Fuel Filter on a Chevrolet Tahoe

The fuel filter on the Chevrolet Tahoe is a small metal canister that is connected to the fuel line and has a fiber-based membrane inside the canister that acts to screen any foreign particles in the fuel supply. The metal canister is located near the vehicle's master brake cylinder on the driver's side of the engine near the firewall. It is a single piece that is welded closed and must be replaced as a complete unit. Changing the fuel filter on your Chevrolet Tahoe is very simple and can be done in under an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 open end wrenches
  • Nylon plumbers tape
  • Locate the fuel filter that is connected to the fuel line with inline bolts. The fuel filter is a silver metal cylinder about 3 inches long and about 2 inches in diameter, sitting next to the master brake cylinder on the firewall.

  • Place an open end wrench on the bolt attached to the fuel filter on the firewall side of the filter. Put another open end wrench on the threaded bolt that holds the fuel line in the filter.

  • Turn the threaded bolt on the fuel line with a wrench until the line is free from the fuel filter. Do the same thing with the fuel line on the other side of the filter until it is detached from the line.

  • Locate the arrow mark on the new fuel filter and point it toward the fuel line that is connected to the carburetor. Place some nylon plumbers tape around the threads on the bolt that is attached to the fuel line on the carburetor side and hand tighten it into the nut on the fuel filter.

  • Place some nylon plumbers tape around the threads of the bolt on the fuel line that goes to the gas tank and hand tighten the bolt into the other end of the fuel filter. Use the open end wrenches to tighten the bolts into the fuel filter on both sides.

  • Start the engine and check for any signs of leaks in the fuel line. Once you have verified that the filter is working properly, shut off the motor.
