Rocker Protection For Any 4x4 - Four Wheeler Magazine

Let’s face it, if you’re driving a Jeep Wrangler you have more bolt-on accessory options available to you than Wal-Mart has creepy shoppers. We’re sure there must be over 100 different rocker guard designs available for the current JK, but what if you are driving a fullsize truck? You probably won’t find anything durable, and any search will likely result in some electric or chrome tube steps that would simply tear off at the mere thought of scraping an obstacle on the trail. So if you are the fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it) owner of a fullsized truck or SUV, you’ve probably found out by now that there isn’t a wealth of aftermarket products available to protect the rocker area of your 4x4. You either have to be creative with your searching and shopping skills or have the ability to fabricate and weld metal.

DOM and chromoly slide over rocks best and are the most durable but HREW (welded-seam) tubing can be used too, although it is a little softer. We’ve built several rockers where we welded the main tube to the body, however this will usually cause them to tear the sheetmetal when the chassis flexes so it’s best not to weld them as shown here.

We’ve built and installed functional rocker guards on several different fullsize rigs with great results. So if you are looking for some rocker protection for your fullsize 4x4, here are a couple of build-it and buy-it options along with a few rocker installation tips.

PhotosView Slideshow We typically build the step tube/protective hoops from 1 1/2-inch, 0.120-wall tubing, DOM in this case. To build the step tube/hoops you’ll need a tubing bender. You can weld them directly to the main tube and give them extra support with a couple shorter pieces of tubing that have been fish-mouthed to fit tight. It’s best to build this main part of the tubular rocker guard on the workbench and then locate it under the body with jackstands so that you can figure out how long the rocker legs need to be to reach the frame. When you measure for the rocker legs make sure the rockers protrude a few inches outside of the body to help protect the doors when the vehicle slides over obstacles. With the rockers located and supported with jackstands you can weld the 1 3/4-inch, 0.120-wall legs to the frame. Be sure to check for fuel lines and wires on the backside of the framerails before welding. Two legs per side are fine in most cases but if you plan to use the rockers roughly consider three to four fully welded legs per side. Don’t worry if you don’t have any fabricating or welding skills. All-Pro Off Road offers pre-built universal rocker guards with several different leg styles to accommodate almost any 4x4. The All-Pro Rock Sliders are available in both 60- and 80-inch versions. These happen to be the 80-inch bolt-on version for a ’95-’04 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Even though they are for a smaller Toyota truck they are extremely durable and the legs can be modified to fit other vehicles. The All-Pro Rock Sliders have a kick-out at the rear tires to help push the vehicle away from an obstacle as you pull forward. Optional fill plates are also available to make the rockers more step-like. Many of the All-Pro Rock Sliders come with these gusseted mounting feet. With these you could simply bolt the rockers to the C-channel frames typically found under older fullsize trucks. However, we think it’s best to weld the gusseted feet directly to the frame once the rocker mounting legs are modified or cut to fit. Your new rocker guards can only protect so much of the body. In this case the rocker area of our 4x4 was well-protected by our home-built rocker protection and still in perfect shape after several years of abuse. However, the doors, fenders, and the rest of the body were a different story. fullsize Sliders jeep Truck Rock Crawling Photo 38299208
