As the evolution of the fullsize truck has grown,so has the ease of getting into the bed. Whether you are vertically challenged (aka short), youth challenged (old), weight challenged (fat), or just becoming accustomed to a new suspension lift, AMP Research has developed a product to make your life a little bit easier. This no-frills step makes getting in and out of your truck bed a breeze. The spring-activated arm attaches firmly to the rear bumper brackets and supports the wide-stepping platform that swings down whenever pressure is applied.

Our test truck was an '06 Dodge Ram 2500 that required no cutting, drilling, or modifications. Installation took about half an hour. With a few basic tools and a tube of Loctite it could be easily installed by a novice shade-tree mechanic. In typical AMP style, the black finish hides nicely under the bumper for a sharp fit and finish.

The wide step offers you a firm place to put your feet, and the rippled surface gives you confidence about your footing. AMP Research did a great job of maintaining a simplistic design that works. Four bolts, one bracket, a pivot arm, and step make up the parts list for this easy upgrade. The adapter bracket uses the existing hardware found on the rear of the bumper. We found it was easier to bolt the pivot arm to the adapter bracket prior to bolting the assembly to the rear bumper. This allowed us to get the placement of the pivoting arm right the first time. Lateral adjustment allows you to move the step base in whatever position works best for you. The important thing is to remember you still have to get your foot between the bumper and the step. We chose to have the step centered more towards the inside of the truck and use the edge of the platform to pull down.
