EDGE Evolution CTS Programmer - 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine

Since the introduction of OBD-II in 1996, companies have been offering up the hardware and software needed to tune your 4x4’s engine for more performance right at home. Edge Products has released the new Evolution CS and CTS units, short for Color Screen and Color Touch Screen, respectively.

Upon first plugging the unit into your OBD-II port, you will be prompted to select a make. Then the unit reads your model from the vehicle’s VIN and assigns the proper tuning options.

The CTS is an in-cab display unit that has a full-color, high-resolution, 4.3-inch touch screen. The CTS has the ability to display up to eight vehicle parameters at a time, has a light meter that automatically dims the screen as the ambient light decreases, has the ability to read and clear trouble codes, and even does performance testing such as 0-60 and quarter-mile times.

By manipulating the fuel injection map, timing curve, and many other parameters in a stock 4x4, a quality custom tune can do wonders for your not-so-stock 4x4. Because the standard tunes from Edge are geared toward stock vehicles, we contacted Bill Cohron of Power Hungry Performance to write us a custom tune for our Ford F-150. Cohron comes recommended by Edge for custom-tuning Ford vehicles. He was able to write us a Performance tune that utilizes 87-octane gasoline instead of the 91-octane tune that the Edge unit ships with, along with a nice towing tune.

Visit our website, 4wheeloffroad.com, for more information and web-exclusive extras on the Edge CTS and Power Hungry Performance Custom tuning.

PhotosView Slideshow Edge provides three levels of tuning for gas trucks: Transmission Only, Towing, and Extreme. We’ve tried all three, and our favorite thus far is Towing. It provides us with extra pep without the need for 91-octane gas. However, we prefer the 87-octane Performance tune from PHP most of all. When you flip the unit over, you find the 6-pin and 16-pin OBD-II cable plugs, mounting slots, and the video-in port. The video-in port can be used to connect the CTS unit to either a backup camera or a DVD player. The 4.3-inch, hi-res screen makes an excellent monitor.
