Dick Cepek Mud Country Tires Review - 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine

Fred Williams Brand Manager, Petersen’s 4Wheel & Off Road

If you truck does work but also sees dirt, then you may be in the market for the new Dick Cepek Mud Countrys, now in load range E. We picture these tires on a 3⁄4- or 1-ton ranch truck that doesn’t see street use too much. Something splattered with dirt, with tools behind the seat and a dog riding in the bed. The tires are rough and tough, and although we mounted them on fancy Dick Cepek wheels, we think they belong on steel rims to really fit the picture in our head.

A lot of heavy-duty truck buyers have been looking for a tire with a high load range that still works off-road and is available in a taller size. We often tow with our truck and haul all types of heavy junk home that we don’t really need (“Wow, a 351 GMC V-6 engine! I need that.”). Plus, many of these trucks have received a leveling kit or similar, making them clear a 35-inch-tall tire with ease. Dick Cepek recognized that demand and brought forth its new E-rated Mud Country. We bolted them on our heavy-hauling truck and went to work.

At just 41⁄2 inches the tires seem to rub, whereas the same size tire on a factory rim with closer to 6 inches of backspacing would clear the wheelwells better. The styling is cool, but we’d really like to see them in all black as well. PhotosView Slideshow Driving a fullsize heavy-duty truck with a leveling kit usually means you’re running at least 35s. However, the offerings of this size for a 17-inch rim in load range E were slim, even slimmer if you wanted an aggressive tire. Dick Cepek brought its Mud Country, now with an E load range, great for heavy cargo or towing where the terrain is messy. Though the tires are designed for heavy loads and high air pressure, we recommend airing them down for hard rutted mountain trails. The max pressure of 65 psi is abusive to kidneys, and the tires need to limber up a bit if you plan on excessive speeds. On the road the Mud Countrys let themselves be known with a audible but not irritating tone. The tires have a heavy sidewall and are designed for heavy loads, but they’re more at home in the dirt than on the tarmac. The DC sidewall and large aggressive tread blocks give the Mud Countrys a great look, and yet flexible tread. The tires have one nylon ply, two steel, and three polyester in the tread construction, with a three-ply polyester sidewall. Load capacity is 3,195 pounds at 65 psi. Before we aired down we ran across a patch of loose gravel. The tires dug in quickly—in fact, they dug in too much. The aggressive tread, though perfect for mud, is a bit much for terrain like this or sand, especially at high pressure. One place we really like these tires is in rocky terrain. The tires flex quite well, and lateral traction is impressive from the large tread pattern. The single circumferential tread groove seems to help reduce sideways movement and improves self cleaning in mud as well as flexibility over jagged terrain.
