There is a feeling of despair that comes with hearing one of your tires hissing away its breath under your 4x4. We’ve all been there. Whether it is a tree branch or a battery tie-down on the trail (yes, we’ve run over both), nothing incites that “oh crap” feeling like a tire quickly on its way down. Typically the answer is a spare, but what if you have plenty more rugged terrain ahead, the puncture isn’t that large, or you aren’t in a safe place to do a wheel and tire swap?

There are many products on the market for quick tire repair, but none are as simple and effective as the venerable tire plug. In addition to being an easy fix for most small to moderate sized punctures, tire plugs won’t coat the inside of your tire or gum up the TPMS sensors. Tire plug kits, such as the ARB Speedy Seal kit you see here, are widely available in the aftermarket, as well as the local auto parts store.

If you find yourself facing a punctured tire, read on to see the quickest way to get yourself moving again in a hurry. Once installed, remember to check the plug regularly and have the tire repaired properly as soon as possible.

Insert the reamer through the puncture hole to clean it out. Thread the repair cord halfway through the eye of the insertion tool. Push insertion tool and repair cord through the reamed-puncture until just a small amount of repair cord is visible. Hold down the sleeve and remove the tool, leaving the plug in place. Trim the excess repair cord and re-inflate the tire, checking for leaks.
