How to Make a Siphon Pump for Gas

A siphon pump is a piece of hose that can be inserted into a gas tank to remove fuel using the force of gravity. Before gravity will work its magic, however, you will need to get the gasoline into the elevated tube to a point where gravity takes over. Most people will suck on the end of the siphon hose to do this, but you can save yourself the bad taste by creating this simple siphon pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic siphon starter pump
  • Length of hose matching the diameter of the pump
  • Scissors
  • Bucket
  • Purchase a siphon starter pump. This small plastic pump has two openings on either side to which a tube can be attached.

  • Use a hose that will fit the diameter of the openings on the starter pump. Cut the hose in two equal lengths.

  • Attach the hoses to either side of the starter pump. You siphon is now complete!

  • Use it by inserting one end of the tube into the gas tank and the other into your empty bucket. Raise the middle of the tube above the tank and start pumping. Eventually gravity will take over and gasoline will flow freely.
