How to Draft to Improve Gas Mileage

Most people are always looking for ways to improve gas mileage on their vehicles, and some ways are more creative than others. Drafting, for example, is a technique that's commonly used by race car drivers. This technique is simple. It basically involves driving behind a large vehicle on the highway. This decreases wind resistance, which helps your vehicle use less gas. However, it can also be dangerous, moving your vehicle closer than the recommended distance required to stop in case of emergency braking.

  • Choose a route that involves highway travel. Drafting is only effective when done on the highway. Don't choose a highway with a lot of twists and turns, because the extra breaking that takes place on these highways makes drafting more risky.

  • Locate a vehicle that's larger than yours. The vehicle has to be significantly larger, so you should try to locate a semi truck. Realize, however, that trucks that are extra-wide can also block your view of the road ahead.

  • Change lanes if necessary to position your vehicle behind the semi truck. You need to be directly behind the truck, but don't forget to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 feet. This is the amount of space needed to be able to brake at 55 miles per hour. If you are driving faster, put even more space between your vehicle and the truck in front of you. If you move too close, you are putting your safety at risk just to save a few gas miles.
