How to Repair Plastic Gas Cans

Plastic gas cans are used as back-up fuel containers for vehicles, or to fill up lawn mowers and other gas-powered machines. Unfortunately, the plastic can crack from long-term exposure to the elements or be punctured by sharp objects, causing the gasoline to leak. Fixing your plastic gas can will prevent you from having to buy a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic gas can
  • Hot knife
  • Spoon heat gun
  • Plastic pieces
  • Large metal piece
  • Wire cutters
  • Tweezers
  • Dump out any gasoline in the gas can.

  • Locate the hole or crack in the gas can. Determine the size of the damaged area.

  • Cut your plastic into a size that is large enough to patch the crack or hole.

  • Place the piece of plastic on a large metal or other non-combustible surface.

  • Heat the plastic piece with the heat gun until it is pliable and transparent. Heat the area of the gas can that is damaged as well.

  • Apply the plastic piece onto the damaged area using tweezers. Connect and smooth down the area with the hot knife.
