How to Make Gas Last Longer

Gas prices have continued to rise throughout the past few decades. Fortunately, more fuel-efficient cars have been manufactured and others are still being manufactured today. There are many ways to make gas last longer and improve gas mileage in even some of the biggest gas-guzzling vehicles.

  • Combine trips as much as possible. When you run errands, wait until you have to leave your home for an appointment or to pick the children up from school. Plan the most efficient route that works with your schedule.

  • Use alternative methods of transportation. Try taking the bus, riding a bicycle, carpooling or even walking when possible.

  • Avoid hills. In order to ride over hills, you must hit the gas. This burns much more fuel than it does if you were to be able to coast on a flatter, less hilly road and your gas will last much longer.

  • Lighten the load in your car. When you have too many items in your trunk or backseat, the extra weight is causing your vehicle to work that much harder. The car will burn more fuel if there is more weight in your car. By removing unnecessary items, you will save more gas.

  • Get regular maintenance on your car. By keeping your car maintained with tune-ups, oil changes and pressure checks on your tires, you will increase gas mileage significantly.

  • Drive the speed limit. Speeding is illegal, first of all, and second of all, by driving the speed limit you are conserving more gas than you would if you were going 5 or even 10 miles over. It is also a good idea to coast as much as possible in order to prevent having to hit the brake and then the gas in order to gain more speed.

  • Add fuel injector fluid into your gas tank before filling up. This may help improve gas mileage.

  • Choose a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Visit the Fuel Economy website (see References) in order to read gas mileage estimates on car models manufactured in the last 20 years.
