How to Improve Camaro Gas Mileage

Camaros are popular and fast sports cars, but their speed tends to come at the expense of gas mileage. While more recent Camaros have had increasingly better gas mileage, older Camaros get an average of 24 miles per gallon highway and 19 miles per gallon city. While Camaro gas mileage isn't exactly a selling point for the car, a few simple changes--many of which you can do yourself--can improve gas mileage without decreasing power.

Things You'll Need

  • Air filter cleaning solution or a new air filter
  • A high-quality exhaust system (muffler and exhaust pipes)
  • Exhaust header
  • Cold air intake system
  • A good mechanic
  • Replace the air filter with a high-flow filter, such as one from K&N. If you don't have the money to do this, clean your old filter by soaking it with air filter cleaner, rinsing it and drying it.

  • Install a new exhaust system with a larger muffler and bigger tailpipes. This will allow air to leave the engine more quickly, keeping the engine cool, which will allow it to use less gas. A dual exhaust is particularly beneficial to gas mileage.

  • Have an exhaust header installed in your exhaust system. Exhaust headers will help the engine take in and expel air from the engine more quickly, optimizing engine performance and decreasing gas waste.

  • Install a cold air intake system, which will cool your engine and maximize performance with less gas usage.

  • Have a mechanic upgrade you computer chip so that it sends less fuel to the engine. This will allow your engine to maintain its current performance and get more mileage with less gas.

  • Drive in the lowest gear possible for road conditions so that you don't make your car work harder than necessary, expending more gas than it needs to.

  • Remove excess weight from the Camaro. Something as simple as cleaning out the trunk can improve gas mileage.

  • Drive slower when possible. Any speeds over 60 miles per hour are extremely inefficient in terms of gas usage.
