Garrett PowerMax Ball-Bearing Turbo System - Duramax Turbo Install
Diesel truck owners oftentimes want more power and torque than is available from the factory setup. The typical installation of an intake, exhaust, and programmer has become the trifecta of power. But when you’ve already done that and still want more, maybe a new turbocharger will satisfy the quest.
We present here a full, step-by-step installation of a Garrett PowerMax dual ball-bearing turbo system on a Duramax LB7 engine (’01 to ’04 Chevrolet/GMC). Garrett claims the ball-bearing design spools up faster, responds quicker to throttle input, and uses less lubricating oil (which helps reduce seal stress and lessens the chance of a turbo failure).
While we didn’t dyno test the Chevy used for this installation, the Garrett turbo is fully capable of supporting 500 horsepower. While the turbo is a direct bolt-on, it’s not an easy task and is certainly best left to a pro. The rear exhaust bolts are very difficult to get off and making sure everything is back together properly and tight is no easy task.
