2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty Drag Races Competition -- Video
The 2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty has just been revealed, and the Blue Oval is already hyping the heavy-duty pickup’s updated Powerstroke engine with a video comparing it to competitors Ram 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500, though not the new 2015 model.
The video begins on a stretch of highway in Davis Dam, Ariz., where the trucks race two at a time up a 6-percent grade while towing a 20,000-pound trailer for seven miles. The first challenger for the 2015 Ford F-350, which is powered by the updated 6.7-liter Powerstroke turbodiesel V-8, is the 2013 Ram 3500 with its 385-hp, 850-lb-ft 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6. The new Powerstroke has yet to receive output ratings, but Ford boasts it will make more than the outgoing engine’s 400 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. The trucks must climb in 90-plus-degree heat to the finish line, which is around 3000 feet above sea level. In the video, Ford claims the F-350 accelerated from 0-45 mph seven seconds faster than the Ram, and a time-lapse shot reveals the Ram was also 21.3 seconds behind the Ford at the finish line.
Next up is the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 with its 397-hp, 765-lb-ft 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8, which also carries over in the just-revealed 2015 model. The F-350 beats the Silverado to 45 mph by 9.4 seconds, and to the finish line by nearly a minute, according to the video. Next, the competitors move to Loveland Pass in Colorado, at a starting elevation of 9500 feet. The Ram gets the jump on the F-350 off the line, but the Ford closes the gap and finishes the four-mile course nearly 10 seconds ahead. The results for the Silverado are similar to the first race, with the Super Duty pulling ahead early and finishing 17.4 seconds before the Chevy.
We have yet to test the new 2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty, but when we tested the current model during our 2011 Truck of the Year program, we found the Powerstroke didn’t live up to its ratings. The engine was outperformed by the diesel in the GMC Sierra Denali 3500 HD in 0-60 mph testing by 0.7 second empty, and half a second when loaded, despite being touted as “class-leading.” We’re anxious to sample the updated Powerstroke and see how it stacks up to the competition for ourselves.
