Auto Insurance Claims: auto accident, subrogation, department of transportation

Question
2 years ago my wife hit a bridge in TX. At the time we were residents of South Dakota and our insurance co. was state auto.
The ins. co. paid for the loss of the car. Last Aug. we moved to TX permanently and cancelled our insurance with State Auto because they did not insure in TX. Last month we received a letter from TX dept of transportation stating that we owed the state $2500.00 for damage to the bridge. Is  State Auto obligated to pay this claim and if so how do I get them to pay. I've contacted them and they seemed willing, however the state wants their money now.

Answer
Indeed State Auto should take care of the damages.  I would refer the Texas Department of Transportation directly to State Auto.  Provide TXDot with the information on your policy and the contact information to State Auto.  You shouldn't have a problem.  Sometimes the recovery department of the Texas Department of Transportation can be a little over zealous, so take it in stride and just refer them to your insurance carrier.
