Auto Insurance Claims: Risks of unathorized drivers driving rental car?, rental car companies, rental contract

Question
Hi,
I'm wondering what the general risks are of having unauthorized drivers driving my rental car (liability for property, medical bills, etc. if in an accident, also what happens if you're pulled over for something minor like speeding)?  In my case,it is not possible for all drivers to pick up the rental car at the time of rental (road trip, picking friends up out of state), but it seems that rental car companies require additional drivers to be at the counter when picking up the car.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Earl,

When renting a car, the ONLY people that are covered by insurance are those that are specifically listed on the rental contract as drivers. It doesn't matter if you buy the rental companies insurance or if you are using your own auto policy for coverage. If a driver is not listed as an additional driver on the rental contract, there is no coverage.

This would mean that if an unlisted driver were in an accident, you as the contracted renter would be personally responsible for all damage that resulted from the accident. This would include property damage and injuries. It's just not worth the risk.

I hope this helps
