Auto Insurance Claims: Whats my liability if I have insurance on a car not owned or driven by me?, buying insurance, unlicensed driver

Question
My friend has separated from her husband who can not get liability insurance so the insurance is in her name.  The car is not registered to her, owned by her or driven by her.  What is her liability? She doesn't want to cut her husband's legs out from under him but he has caused them so much debt she is try to limit her liabilty.

Answer
Hi James,

In most cases she would not be liable if he was at fault for an accident. However, I would question why he can't get liability insurance. If it is because his license is suspended or revoked then she could be liable for buying insurance to allow an unlicensed driver the ability to drive.

I hope this helps
