Tires: 94Y v 98Y, load index, inflation pressures

Question
Hi, Barry. Could you please explain to me the significance of a tire having a load rating of 94Y as distinct from 98Y? How important is the difference?

Answer
Frank,

Assuming you are talking about the same tire size:  The difference between a 94 Load Index and a 98 Load index is load carrying capacity that can be used by using higher inflation pressures.

So if your car calls for a 98 Load Index, then a 94 Load Index does not have enough load carrying capacity.

But if your car calls for a 94 Load Index, then you can use a tire with a 98 Load Index without fear.
