Auto Insurance Claims: car accident sublet what does that mean, subro, subrogate

Question
Our son was in an accident in which the other driver failed to yield to him and hit him in the passengers side of the truck. We got a call from our insurance company saying that they were going to write out a check to us minus the deductible. Our agent said they were subletting to the other drivers insurance. What does this mean?

Answer
Maria,

The term is not sublet.  It is "subro" which is short for subrogate.

As you filed a claim with your own insurance company, they are legally bound to handle the claim under available coverage per the terms of your policy.  You will pay a deductible per the terms of your policy and then your insurance company will pursue the at fault party to recover both the money that they have paid out along with your deductible.  If they are able to successfully recover this money, the deductible will then be refunded to you.
