Auto Insurance Claims: parked vehicle damaged, writing a novel, maughan

Question
Hello,
Without writing a novel, I was parked in a designated spot at work when I witnessed another car parking, backing up very close to my car. She was there only for a quick moment, let her kids out the back door on the side of my vehicle. I witnessed this, others also witnessed how close she was but I was the only one to witness the kids exiting out the their car towards mine.
Long story short, I have a pristine BMW that now has a large scratch and 2 inch dent.
Can you advise what I can do. I know this person because her husband works at my firm.
Should I have problems with at fault, must I contact my insurance for assistance or have a police report done.
My deductible is 1K and the damage would be around that number.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
BTW, I live in Reno but this is just a general question how to proceed.

Answer
Hi Dominic-

It sounds like you suspect the kids caused the damage but you don't know for sure.  If that's the case, you would have to contact them (the parents) and see if they will admit to it.  Otherwise it would be treated as a hit & run and that sometimes will not pay out with some companies without identifying or catching the other driver.
I would suggest you contact your insurance company and report it as you don't have anything to lose.  Accidents that are not your fault do not raise your rates.  They may be able to contact the owners of the other car on your behalf and get a statement from them.  I don't see how a police report would help at this point, but written statements from the witnesses might come in handy lately.
