Auto Insurance Claims: Brother Borrows car, consequenses, auto policies

Question
While my wife and I were out of town over the Christmas Holiday, my 16-year-old, unlicensed brother borrowed my car and backed into another car on private property at a gas station. Police and fire responded and he was cited for not having a license and released to the custody of our father. Will my insurance cover the accident?

Answer
Hi John-

Your car should be covered because it was basically a theft.  But auto policies exclude coverage for anyone that does not have permission to use the vehicle.  So that means the other car will not be covered by your insurance.  Your brother will have to pay for that out of his pocket.
I sure hope he learned a lesson. Make sure you don't bail him out- he needs to suffer the full consequenses for this one.

Have a great 2008,

Sheldon
