Auto Insurance Claims: Bicycle hits car, auto insurance policy, christmas lights

Question
We live in Key West and for the most part get around on our bicycles (more earth friendly).  My partners 13 year old daughter was given a new bike for Christmas and out for a ride to see Christmas lights she ran into a new Jeep. We stopped and it appeared little damage was done (scratch on rear light and bumper).  But this morning the young girl who owns the Jeep and lives out of town presented us with a bill for over $900!  We believe our auto policy with State Farm has a $500 deductible. Needless to say this has ruined our Christmas and the 13 year old will not be permitted to ride her new bike any more as we can not afford another $500 claim should she crash again.  Any advice as to how to handle this situation to make it somewhat more affordable?  THANK YOU!

Answer
Hi Christie,
Claims such as this do not fall under your auto insurance policy.
The fall under the liability portion of your homeowners or renters policy, which carries no deductible.
Make a report right away to your company so they can investigate the accident.
Unless the Jeep was parked, it's very possible that the 13 year old was not at fault, or only partially at fault.
I hope this has been of help.
